Charles received his Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University studying political theory and political communication. His dissertation develops a theory of democracy focused on the competition to mobilize voters by creating symbolic associations between group attitudes and public policies. A native of the California coast, he received his B.A. in Political Theory from UC San Diego. Before joining the JFI editorial team, Charles worked with LIFT, a non-profit that provides unrestricted cash transfers for low-income parents, to develop their policy research and advocacy strategy.
